Types of strokes

A stroke can occur when a blood clot or plaque obstructs a blood vessel in the brain, causing an Ischemic Stroke, or when a blood vessel ruptures, resulting in a Hemorrhagic Stroke.

Hemorrhagic Stroke manifests through two types, each with distinct origins and consequences. Intracerebral events involve a burst vessel leaking blood into the surrounding brain, while Subarachnoid strokes result from a burst aneurysm. The spilled blood disrupts brain function, generating swelling and pressure, leading to cellular and tissue damage. High blood pressure and age-related changes in blood vessels are primary contributors to this stroke variant.

On a different note, strokes, though commonly associated with the elderly, can affect children, often occurring as a side effect during other illnesses. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a prevalent cause of childhood stroke, with 17 to 24 percent of affected children experiencing strokes, typically between ages 3 and 10.

Relief from heel pain

Often people experience heel pain right after they wake up in the morning or after long periods of rest. This type of pain is called calcaneal spur or plantar fasciitis.

This pain may be because of an extra bone growth in the heel portion and it can be found using x-rays. This is common and the bone need not be removed. There are no predisposing factors and young people are commonly affected.

The pain due to this problem will be obvious in the morning but with time the pain will be relieved.

Treatment

Usually, this is a self-limiting condition. Home remedies would often help with the pain.

Take warm water in a bucket and put a tablespoon of rock salt in it. Soak your feet in the water for about 10 minutes before you go to sleep.

Use soft rubber slippers (MCR slippers). Use these slippers even when you are inside the home.

Foot exercises can help with the pain. Consult with a physiotherapist and learn these exercises. These exercises will strengthen the foot muscles.

Surgery is rarely recommended for patients with this type of heel pain. The pain would usually go away within 2-3 months and might come back after 6 months or 1 year.

But if the pain does not resolve on its own and continues over 3 months then your orthopaedician might suggest you go with depo medrol steroid injection. With one or two doses spaced for about 1 month can help relieve the pain.
